California Trails & Travel

Hey guys. My brother and I are headed south to California from Portland August 14-23 for an epic adventure.
Obviously since I've never done the rubicon yet, this is a must. But that's just a few day and need some more must do trails and things to do.
Suggestions?

Awesome breweries?
Other great trails?
-Dusy Ershaim?
-Barrett Lake?

Unfortunately, Barrett Lake is still closed but should be opening soon - so the NF website says :rolleyes2:
Dusy will be open but it's a really long trail and I would recommend that you plan for at least 3 days on it to really enjoy it.

Other great trails are Fordyce up by Truckee, Swamp Lake down by the Dusy, Niagara Rim between the two.

I did a quick google, it's a horrible website, and it didn't link to anything official. But they guys said it opened up a few days ago? Think is will be open by mid august?

Thanks! I'm going to look at those. Any favorites at the top of the list or are they all equals.
And the most important question. Where are the best breweries that I can hit while not on the trail? I'm a big beer nerd. So Russian River, and Lagunitas are on the wish list.

- Slick Rock
- Deer Valley
- Hell Hole

Ill keep naming them as i think of more. The ones named above are great too. Let us know when you're here, shouldn't be too hard to get a group together to run one of those.

That would be great. If I remember right, are you up by the Russian River brewery too?

Sounds like you're gonna have a heck of a trip! And like Scott said, it won't be hard to get a group together if you want some company!

Well what do you know - I just checked this morning and the NF website still showed Barrett Lake as closed but I just checked now and see that it's open!!

You remember correctly, maybe 45 min from me. I have a Pliny the elder box in my garage. Buddy dropped some beers off in it and about flipped when I said I tossed it! ;)

That's a big negative on Deer Valley. Just did a check on the NF website and it's still listed as being CLOSED. If you've run it recently in its entirety, you did it illegally.

Not the entirety, one county has it open, the other has it closed. We ran it to the county line. Can't remember which is which, but we started and exited on HWY 4.

We talked to the rangers first. They asked us to fill out a trail report, which we did. Everyone up there was super nice.

You could cut over and do the Sierra Buttes as you head south. Easy but very scenic. Once you get in Tahoe there is another great scenic trail on the north shore, but I'm blanking on the name right now. After that you are in Tahoe for the rubicon you mentioned. Keep in mind California is a big state. Time will run out quicker than you think.

That would be great! We are just going to fly by the seat of our pants, and see where the wind takes us.
But I can't imagine not running a trail or drinking some beers with the Wayalife guys!

18 hours till epic road trip!
I'm leaving Portland at noon tomorrow! So that will out us in the I-5 area of Northern California tomorrow. A bunch of you had been talking about showing me the trails. Any takers for a saturday run maybe?

Also, bc_yolo said there's a bunch of awesome guys near the Rubicon. And to just put the word out, and there'd be somebody willing to let me drop my top and doors for a few days while I run my first rubicon trip. Any takers?

What is your timing? I can't make a run this weekend but have room to store your top and doors.

I will be heading out on Monday though and not back until Wednesday.

I'm just outside of Coloma so from here you can take the old route from Georgetown which is cool.

Haha, you said a lot of Greek to me, but nothing google maps can't figure out. I think the plan is. Get there by Sunday night. Bobby said camping out on the rocks by the entrance to the trail is fun. So that puts us at a monday start, planning on taking three days to enjoy the trip.

Haha, yeah. If you are planning on taking I-5 to 50 to get to the trailhead, it's not that far out of the way.

Feel free to PM me. I can help and explain the maps if you want.
