Balance beads?

Got a quick question for anyone who used these before. Just got some new cooper stt pro's mounted last night(315/70r/17. The shop used balance beads and I'm getting a shimmy in the frontend from 40-55mph. This is the first time I had these beads installed, so it's all new to me. I'm not sure how much they put in, but the shop does a lot of bigger size tires and never had any problems like this before. My understanding is there's a chart that tells you how much beads to put in on a given tire size. They want me to drop it back off for them to tear them back down and see what the issue is. I'm just looking to see if anyone else knows how much beads were used in mounting your 315's. I'm not 100% but I think I overheard them saying they used 4.5oz in each tire. I'm looking on the Internet and seeing multiple charts saying 8oz for my size.
 
I've never used them. I think Ddays got his 37s on without balancing at all, but can't remember for sure.
 
my 37" Coopers with beadlocks needed balanced (currently need rebalanced) but my shop used sticky weights Not a huge fan of the beads
 
I am sorry to hear your shop convinced you to run beads. I have always seen them to be snake oil at best and promoted by fanboys. Even with my 40" Coopers mounted on bead lock wheels, I still prefer to have my wheels balanced with tape weights.
 
Yup, no weights at all on mine. Honestly I do get a slight vibration above 70-75 depending on the road quality. Not enough at this point to get balanced though.
70-75 is plenty fast enough in these. I get visions of death wobble at 80mph :)shock:) in my head occasionally that remind me to sloooow down....

You know, I was too after installing mine but it would start to fade at about 80+ MPH... not that I ever drive that fast :crazyeyes:

I do a lot of road miles in my Jeeps and before heading down to SEMA, I decided to have them balanced. Of the 4 wheels, only 1 required a significant amount of weight. 2 didn't need any at all and now my Jeep rides like it's on rails. Makes me wonder if maybe the tire just wasn't seated just right when installing the bead lock ring. Oh well, all is good now :yup:

You got yours done at Costco, right?
I was quoted $32 by my Costco to do all 5 :cool: but when I went back to get them done the manager didn't want to do it. I cannot find any shop that will do it. I may try a heavy truck repair place by me & see if they will just for the hell of it. If they won;t
I can live with what I have.

WTF? No lie, I paid $20 to have 4 tires balanced. They did try to talk me out of it might make it worse being that I have true bead locks but I told them I undestood and could always clear the weights off if I didn't like it. Fortunately, they nailed it and my ride is sweet even at 95 mph - er, umm, that is, if I were ever to get my Jeep rolling that fast that is :crazyeyes: :D

Sucks that you can't find a shop that'll help you. Back when I lived in socal, my local Discount Tire would balance my 40x15.50's but my current shop in Carson City won't touch my 37's. Guess it just depends on the shop.
 
I had discount balance my 37" Cooper STT Pro on beadlocks, no issues.

Balancing beads don't work. I never ran them but I did run a semi truck tire shop at one point and truckers always complained about them.

Yeah, I'm gonna keep trying just to satisfy my curiousity if nothing else. If I can't find one no biggie..

95?! I hit 90 driving through Kansas and Wyoming on seperate trips this year. 1st time I had to stop & change underwear. 2nd time I remembered why I had to stop & change underwear!
 
Okay, so I am sorry that I have some physics background and remember some of it.

The LAST thing you would want in a balanced rotation system is anything moving within that system. Also, these "beads" would simple roll to the furthest point away from the center axis due to rotation inertia and thereby INCREASE the imbalance of the system.

The only people I see stating that balance beads work are the sales people. What an effin joke!!

That's how I roll...going on I-5, you can't get caught slippin' so you gotta stay with the flow of traffic...sometimes that's 95mph. No issues so far. As a matter of fact, Rhino drove smoother now than it did running on stock suspension & tires.

This all sounds really familiar. Just keep arguing about it and defending your position and maybe you can convince others that it's fact. :cheesy:
