A good book on 4x4 Off Roading

Ladies and Gentlemen,

What is the best book out there for information on 4x4 off roading?

I would like suggestions that deal mostly with using a Jeep off road and it would be nice to get an idea what must I carry with me, how to operate certain safety equipment, things to look out for, etc. If it has general off road technology, that would be an added bonus. I know that there is no substitute for experience, but it would be nice to read information to get at least a basic foundation. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Sorry, don't know of any book that covers what you're looking for. My recommendation is to ask questions here, do a google search or just get out there with guys and gals that know what they are doing - that is probably the best thing you can do.

You can search Amazon for off-road books. Think there is a 4x4 bible or something like that. I got it as a gift soon after my jeep. Heck, if I can find I'll send it to you for shipping.

But honestly, who wants to read a book. I knew absolutely nothing about jeeps or off-roading before joining here. You can get so much more information here and answers to specific questions about actual jeeps. Your best jeep reading is right here. [emoji106]

Thank you both for the input. I agree and want to say that I have learned so much on this website. The problem is, I know so little that I do not even know what I don't know, you know? But really, in all seriousness, I will continue to read this forum and learn a much as I can and ask questions along the way. I have already figured out how to avoid the common pitfalls that newbies encounter from other people's mistakes, it is great. I am very thankful.

Jason, I know which book you are referring to, but wasn't sure if it was worth it. Sounds like it is a waste of money based on the comments so far: http://www.amazon.com/Four-Wheelers-Bible-Edition-Motorbooks-Workshop/dp/0760335303

2nd edition even.

Find some people to go out with also. Learn your rig and what you can do. Go to the "suds and grub" in your areas if they have any gatherings like that. Ask questions. etc. Plus its more fun doing all of that than reading a book. :thumb:

In addition to all the previous suggestions. What helped me was to also peruse YouTube videos.
There's some good info out there, and a bunch of what NOT to do as well.

As already stated a few times, just get out there with some folks you trust.

The books will not even begin to do it justice. Having experienced folks talk you through obstacles and watching others will be WAY more valuable than anything you can read in a book.

Hope to see ya on the trail!

I was just reading this the other day. Not bad for some beginning steps and sounds similar to what you're looking for.

I have an awesome 4x4 book but it's only here for Colorado. It give green, yellow, red trail maps depending on what kind of wheeling you are trying to do, also has some basic info about State laws, general offroad rules, and common trail courtesy. Hopefully you can find one like that for your area.

Truthfully, I would recommend getting a winch if you don't have one. My wife cringed when I told her the price tag of our Warn (after I bought it of course), but it saved our a$$es when no one was around a couple weeks ago and we were in the middle of no where with our kids, she doesn't whine about it anymore.

Here is a link to a basic offroad guide by Mark Smith that you may find helpful.

I'll echo what's been said here. Get out and wheel with people. There are a ton of people on this forum I trust. I know they have the same goals on the trail as I do (safety, minimal damage, family atmosphere, good time). You're in Reno, super close to some of the best wheeling in the country. There's groups from Norcal and Reno that get together frequently. I think you said you're still looking to pick up a JKUR in the next months, so you'd be more than welcome to ride with me or anyone else on one of the trail runs in the meantime.

I did that on Fordyce; my jeep wasn't capable enough, so I rode with Rox Star (huge shout out to him!). I got to see the trail, learn about other drivers, and I even managed to snap 400 pictures or so.

Offer is always on the table, you're more than welcome to join us.
