Caught the Bug
My buddy is getting rid of his XJ - I gave it a once over and all I can really find is some rust on the bottom of one of the doors and a good chunk that's rusted out below the drivers side floor board but it looks repairable. The in-line six has leaks galore but could be fixed for sure. otherwise seems to run good and stop good and he's been using it for years as a daily driver with no major issue.

Was thinking of picking it up for a project in the future so my question is do you think the rust is a dealbreaker for $500?

For 500,I would jump on it regardless of the rust. Good motor and tons of aftermarket support if you decide to mod it.
 
What year and mileage?

Rust on the body can be an indicator that you will find it other places. My 2000 had several bolts that were rusted to badly to re-use or just snapped when I tried to remove them.
 
A friend of mine picked up a similar XJ last summer to build with his son as a first vehicle for $700. Same floor board issue but little else has come up so far.
