Personally, for me the trans pan was such a PITA to drop I don't plan on doing it ever again.
At 60k I dropped the pan, replaced the filter (rock catcher), and replaced the pan.
I added a Magnefine inline filter in series with my auxilliary cooler.
From now on I'll do partial fluid changes out of the filler tube (mityvac pump) and rely on the Magnefine for filtration.
If I ever drop that pan again it's going to be because of a real problem, not maintenance.
FWIW, my trans was fine, I added an aux cooler about six months after I bought the jeep (new in 2008) and saw how hot the trans would get. That was before the J30 HOTOIL recall.
At 60k the ATF still looked bright and smelled fresh. I only did the pan drop because I was bored.
Still, after replacing about half the ATF during the pan drop, the improvement in shift smoothness was really quite remarkable.
