4.56 vs 4.88 3.6 on 37s

Just got 37s and the 4.10s are struggling a bit at highway speeds (70-75).
I was pretty happy with handling on 315/70/17 duratracs on 4.10s, but the 37s are just a little much. If I was happy with that, should i go with 4.56? The new tires are MT/Rs and measure 3" taller (36.75 vs 33.75). It's mostly a DD with some offroad trails and maybe a little rock crawling when I get brave. I want good handling, but also decent mpg. I'm getting about 14.8 right now with the 4.10s, and was at 16.2 with the old tires.

4.88 at least is my vote. I went 5.13 and 37s and love the pep. Very similar to 4.10 stock rubicon feel.

I felt that the stock tires with 4.10s were to steep at highway speeds. I ended up with better gas mileage after I upped the tire size the first time.

If you want gas mileage go with 4.88 otherwise 5.13s is where it's at!

When I had 37's I went with 4:88's and regretted it. If you're a slow driver and can keep it under 70 it might be ok. However, you might have a bit higher rpm's cruising around but your jeep won't be hunting for gears to keep up in the fast lane or in a mild grade at speed.

I'm running these which measure 37" tall. I'm running 5.13's and if I'm driving in the green even doing 70 I'll get just over 17mpg

I'm going 4.88 with 35" tires that measure a real world 33.75". I was recommended that by some people on here and in my local jeep club. I would vote for 5.13 with 37" and no lower than 4.88 especially if you want to go crawling.

Without question, 5.13's with 37's and a 3.6L motor especially if you have an automatic. Anything less and you'll regret it.

Hands down 5.13s like Eddie said. I was on the fence between 4.88s and 5.13s when I bumped up to 37" Nittos. Went with the 5.13s based on everything I read here on WAL and I am so glad I listened. The 5.13s really get the engine back in the power band as the 3.6's power band is a bit higher. Go with the 5.13s and you'll be a happy camper!

I am currently running 4.56 gears with 35's. I am planning on going to 37's after possibly a PR44 front housing. How bad will 4.56 gears suck with 37's and how will 5.13 gears hold up in a 44?

I didn't think I'd get so much 5.13 love. I thought 4.88's would be the choice here! What RPM are you running with 37s at 75-80 mph?

I am running 37's with 5:13's with a PR44 up front and it's been awesome so far drives easy MPG @ high 16's that's with 70MPH on the HWY.

Damn, hard choice... i got back and forth every week while i dream of bigger tires!

I drive 30 miles on the interstate 7 days a week at 70-80mph. Don't know what would he best for me. :banghead:

Everyone has already told you 5:13. If at the end of the day you don't want to listen then just do what you want

Take it from this guy. He let the forum build his jeep.

I've drive JKU w both 4:88 and mine w 5:13. The 4:88 still is always searching for gears in the auto. The 5:13 is much more civilized.
