35" wheel and tire package for Full fender coverage

Hi everyone,

I have a 2013 JKUR and was running 305/70/16 MTR's on 8.5 inch wide wheels with 4.5" of backspace. I was given a fix it ticket buy a state trooper for my tires not complying to state law (PA is a full coverage state). I really want to run a 35 inch (or close to) tire combo this summer but with the state boys having a field day writing tickets lately I need to make sure they stay under the factory fenders (state trooper stated that I can't change to wider ones due to factory ones are already to wide.

I'm currently running factory rubicon wheel and tire combo and really need more clearance for the trails I run close to home. I'd prefer a Mud terrain tire but am open for any/all suggestions.

Thanks in advance

Step #1 - Move out of PA
Step #2 - Celebrate being further away from Heinz Field with a microbrew of choice :drinks:

Wish it was that easy Chris. My wife and I have 2 small kids, most of our families are within an hour of where we live. We are also lucky enough to have very good jobs in the area. That said I'd love to be on the left coast.

I had run the larger tire combo for over a year before getting pulled over. All the local state troopers are cracking down on the full coverage law. They are fining the inspection stations for passing cars that should not pass. I'm trying not to let this get me too down and looking for good solutions (if any exist). I'm currently running a teraflex leveling kit but had planned to change to a good quality spring lift this summer along with 35" tires. The areas I wheel in locally require more ground clearance than I currently have. Getting sick of getting hung up and dragging my belly ;) At least my winch gets a workout.

The problem is interpretation of the law. You have FENDERS, not fender flares. The law says that fender FLARES shall fully cover wheels but be no wider than 3". The flare is to allow extending the fender to cover wider (which are allowed in PA) tires.

Fenders and such:
Fenders
Pennsylvania requires fenders on all vehicles and both fenders and mud flaps on medium and heavy duty trucks. There is a maximum fender flare width limit of 3 inches and fenders must cover the full width of the tire tread.

Vehicle width:
Dimensions
In Pennsylvania, the maximum vehicle width is 96 inches, the maximum vehicle height is 13 feet 6 inches, and the maximum overall single vehicle length is 40 feet.

PVC 4922
PVC 4923

Tires:
Tires
All tires on vehicles driven in Pennsylvania must be safe. There is a minimum tire tread depth of 2/32 inches. Tire grooving is not allowed below the original tire tread depth.

Wheels
To comply with Pennsylvania's street legal laws, vehicles must be equipped with wheels that are compatible with the tires that are mounted on them.

Put on some of Bushwacker's wider flats or pockets and be done with it

The Bushwacker flats are same width as stock. The pockets look terrible. Zenon makes flats that are wider than stock but I have not heard good things about them. Are there any other options?

Where in pa do you live? I'm in west Chester and my tires stick a good 2" or so outside of my trimmed factory flares. I run 315/75r16's btw.

Warren, PA (northwest) Like I said... never had a problem until now. I spoke to a couple of other state boys and they told me that the cop that pulled me over has a big bone to pick with jeeps for some reason. He has made it his mission to take dangerous vehicles off the road ;)

What a tool. I honestly wouldn't worry about it or if you have the stock tires swap them in for the fix it ticket then throw your bigger tires back on

I agree! Cops and the PA laws they follow here are ridiculous!! Every new cop here always wants to be a super cop/blow boy! These guys must have been picked on in school, have no life, no friends and now the have the authority to be ass hats, like its payback!! They worry about the dumbest shit and meanwhile PA has become a feeding ground for drug dealers and murderers but god forbid your tires stick out!!!

You are right, cops should pick and choose the laws they enforce... Oh wait they are not allowed to do that.

Perhaps call your congressman if you don't like the vehicle laws.

Okay first off those ridiculous laws that you claim that they enforce are the same laws that are braking willingy. I feel that you have an issue with cops... try this for me its a crazy thought if you follow the laws they will not have to be the bad guy and have to write a citation for an illegal act. If you cant follow your state DOT laws and regulations you probably shouldnt live in that state. And I was not picked on in school, nor did I not have friends. Brought to you by your friendly Military Police Officer. Thanks for blaming all cops for your stupidity.

I did not start this topic so we could all argue about the police. I have no problems with law enforcement (that said is California not a full coverage state?) . Can we please get back to the topic at hand?

After wheeling w coz and Hinrichs and seeing the wide stance of their jeeps I went and bought wheel spacers so I'll stick out of my bushwhacker flats more now! Hope I don't get snagged for a ticket here in NJ

Scott, One of my buddies made an attachment to widen his fenders by taking another set of stock fenders and made them attach with a small clip and a few screws. It would still withstand the daily drives and would remove them when he would hit the trails. But truly there is not really an easy fix for this. You could go the route of swapping tires and all that but there's always the possibility of getting another ticket. You may need to look into skinnier tires if you cannot find a good set of fenders for your rig.

The ads say the Bushwacker flats add width and the Xenon ones add 1-1/2 inches to the width to cover wider tires. I would check with a vendor as either of these might get you out of the pulled-over zone in PA

I was not blaming ALL cops?! I was referring to the newest members. If they were ONLY doing their job then why is it only the newest/youngest officers are pulling people over for things the other guys have seen for years and only writing citations for some people not following the law while others they leave alone??? I have no problems with cops unless they make it a point to be jerks because they have a badge (and you can't tell me no one has ever abused the privilege). My jeep complies with the PA laws therefore I guess MY STUPIDITY has cost me no problems. Doesn't mean I have to agree with every law just cause I obviously have to follow it. I have written and complained about some of the ridiculous laws, obviously got me nowhere, but then again I'm so stupid how would I know??

Bushwacker flats are same width as stock. They do make an extended pocket flair that in the catalog I didn't like, but after seeing them on a Jeep - I think they look good.
I haven't taken the flats I bought out of the box and thinking I may go with the extended because I like that look
