Toward the end of 2015, then President Obama signed into law new legislation that would allow "low volume car manufacturers" to produce as many as 325 replica vehicles for customers across the country. In other words, a manufacturer could start building something like an old Willys or CJ-5 and sell it as a new and as luck would have it, a company called UMC or Universal Motor Company will be doing just that and this is the early CJ-5 they brought out to the 2017 SEMA show. As you can see, this piece of new old iron comes complete with a modern 3.6L V6 Pentastar but you will also be able to order it as a rolling chassis. In fact, they will be making a CJ3A, a CJ-5 and a CJ-7 and the best part is, they won't cost you six figures. In fact, their rolling chassis are slated to run around $13,000 and turn key Jeeps will be selling at about $27,000. In other words, cheaper than a new Jeep or about the cost of a side-by-side UTV. This just might be the coolest thing I've seen at the show!

Oh, that is so cool! I guess you’d be limited to a newer engine, if you needed to pass emissions, though. I’d love one with a 5.7L, fuel injected Chevy, but I’ll bet it would not be road legal in some states?

Motech? Any thoughts?

Wondering if they mated the old transmission or if they have a new one.. Love the old school dual shifter..

Definitely the coolest thing I’ve seen posted up yet! The potentials are endless! To buy and restore a CJ chassis and body panels to like new quality rolling chassis could easily cost you more than 13k. That’s a huge head start! Now all they need is a CJ 8!

That's what I was thinking. A decent quality restoration could run you upwards of 30k and this is all brand new
