There are few ways I can think of to kick off a new year than to head out into the Mojave Desert with all our good friends here on WAYALIFE! Although we did do this a week later than we had hoped, our first group run for 2014 would be one out to an area known as Crucero. This is a trip that starts off in Afton Canyon, heads east to the old town site of Crucero, turns south toward the Mesquite Hills and then crosses over the Broadwell Dry Lake before hooking back to pavement in the town of Ludlow. Along the way, we got ford two deep water crossings, took a hike up Spooky Canyon, paid our respects at a gravesite belonging to Delores Holland, attempted to decipher petroglyphs left behind by ancient inhabitants and paid a visit to the mysterious Mojave Megaphone. Below are a few shots that we took along the way and I hope you enjoy them.
Being that we were coming out from our home in Northern Nevada, we booked a room in Lenwood the night before and were fortunate enough to have a few friends come out early and party with us - CHEERS!!
The following morning, we met up with the rest of the gang over at the Flying J...
In all, I think we counted up 33 JK's, 2 TJ's, over 70 people and several dogs joining us for the day...
Heading out across I-15 and looking back, it was Jeeps as far as the eye can see...
Pulling off at Afton Canyon Rd. and airing down for the trail ahead...
Time to hit the dirt!
Right from the get go, there are two points along the Mojave Riverbed that actually have enough water where fording is required. Most of the time, it's deep enough were we've seen multiple vehicles hydrolock their motors...
Looks like this was one going to be one of the deeper years...
Of course, with a set of 40's, it wasn't too bad...
Next!! Being such a big group, I was only able to get a few shots of the rigs immediately behind us and here they are...
As you can see, the stock Jeeps were going deep...
Pulling up to the next water crossing...
Here we go!!
Back on dry land again...
Pulling up to our first stop of the day - Spooky Canyon!!
Grab your flashlights and let's go for a hike!!
The walls are closing in...
Everyone lending a helping hand in on the tougher climbs...
For the more adventurous, it's up, up and away to the top...
