Because we're running an EVO DTD suspension with an EVO Lever System in the rear, we've had to modify our exhaust so that it dumps in front of the rear axle. While this didn't seem to be a problem back when we were still running a 3.8L V6 motor on Moby, we did start to see or should I say, "hear" a problem after doing an LS swap. The problem was that we tried to keep our exhaust California legal (being that at the time, we still lived in California) and that meant we needed a third cat in place and in front of the muffler. This in turn pushed the dump further back and closer to the rear axle or more importantly, closer to the control arm joints. Thanks to that and the greater amount of heat coming from the exhaust, we've found that the grease in the Johnny Joints here would get cooked and that would allow them to become very squeaking in a short amount of time. Over the past year, I've tried a number of different greases to see if one could withstand the heat but with no real success or should I say, up until now.

Perhaps it's too early to say but I recently started using Royal Purple Ultra-Performance Grease (UPG) on my joints as it's supposed to be a high performance synthetic grease that is also stable at high temperatures. As far as grease goes, it isn't the cheapest you can get but then, like most of Royal Purple's products, it does seem to be working a lot better. Certainly, I've held off on making this post until I had a bit more time to test it out and so far, it seems to be keeping my joints squeak free a lot longer than before. With any luck, they'll just stay squeak free but already, this grease has extended the service interval or need for reapplication and I'm really happy with that.

Anyway, for those of you who are looking for a good lube to use on your Jeep, I'd have to recommend Royal Purple Ultra-Performance Grease. :2thumbsup:
 
So it was your control arms then that were really squeaking while in Moab and not the joints on the lever like you initially thought, huh! Good to know! I need to buy new grease anyway so I might have to look into this!

Yeah, started looking for the squeak in earnest and found the exact points for the squeaks were coming from the driver side rear control arm joints at the axle. Removing the arms and rotating the joints on a bench revealed they were sticking and not moving very freely. The grease at these joints looked dried out and almost like plastic. The other joints on Moby seemed to be okay. I had always thought this is where my squeaking might be coming from and because of the exhaust dump location and now I think I've just verified as much. This new Royal Purple Grease seems to be holding up a lot better and I'm hoping it'll continue to hold up over a longer period of time.
 
I'm gonna give this grease a try on my Currie arms. The grease I get is not nearly as good as rp, and I do get some squeaks from the joints. Thanks for posting this up!

You bet! Like I said, I can only speak for what I have seen so far. Being that it's only like $11 for a tube, I hope more people do give it a try so that there's more first hand experience with the stuff out there. :yup:

One question: Which grease gun are you using and have you tried the "LocknLube" zerk fitting grease coupler?
 
Have you tried Lucas? I use it in everything I own and we use it at work with good success however would love to know if you've tried it to see how it stands against others.

I just use an old grease gun that I bought years ago from I can't even remember where. Sorry. As far as LocknLube goes, nope, can't say I have tried it. Is it any good?

Have you tried Lucas? I use it in everything I own and we use it at work with good success however would love to know if you've tried it to see how it stands against others.

Honestly, Lucas is what I was going to try next if this didn't work out. But, so far so good with the Royal Purple.
 
I'm due for a grease gun reload so I might have to try the stuff. Grease gun..... My #1 hated tool but necessary
 
As far as LocknLube goes, nope, can't say I have tried it. Is it any good?

I don't know but plan to find out and I will let you know. My idea is to get a nice lube gun with that fitting to make lubing more convenient, meaning it will get done more often. I suspect it will be in a couple of months and will share it with everyone here.
 
Is this grease only for control arms and stuff like that? Or can it be used for other stuff? I'm rebuilding some axles and was looking at a good grease for the bearings and everything
