I’d state it differently. The basic theme is that people believe what they want to believe based on the amount of “evidence” they find acceptable to reinforce the narrative that makes them feel good. Most of the time it only takes a question or two to uncover a person’s intellectual hypocrisies...

And then on Sundays, they teach them that Adam and Eve were the first two humans, that people have been around for only 6,000 or so years, and that some dude with a funny name was able to part an entire sea (all of which is far more believable than a moon landing). ;)

I doubt many regular Joe’s can afford to buy something in NYC. Ironically, your question is actually why the liberals think a law like this is a good idea. It is supposed to give non profit organizations the ability to buy properties and then sell them to regular Joe’s at below market value.

And that would be a taking in violation of the 5th Amendment to the Constitution, especially if the property was given to a NGO. Eminent domain law is pretty well-established and NYC is already pushing close to the edge.

Maybe I’m missing something, but COPA doesn’t force a property seller to sell for less than market value. The nonprofit gets a right of first refusal but it has to beat all other offers. So, the seller isn’t getting screwed out of money. While I don’t agree with such a law, at least it isn’t...
