Take it to a good mechanic and have as leak down check done to see if the head is cracked or warped, any valves are burnt, head gasket is blown or rings are worn.

Take no chances. Keep shooting until it changes shape or catches on fire.

Turn the engine over with the spark plugs removed and see if it’s turning freely

I know you said you just had the heads, but start with a leak down check. That’s where you bring the cylinder to top dead center with a set of pressure gauges and pressurize it with regulated air pressure to see how well the cylinders are holding compression. It will tell you if you have a leak...
