Quite a bit of work going on at a house I manage this summer! They just started a few days ago and have already started removing most of the logs. They are replacing the log columns with steel since the logs are stress cracking and compressing. The wood deck was removed last year for liability reasons and we didn’t have enough time to plan and rebuild it before this past winter.

Nice house. Why all the snow stoppers? Usually there’s one level of them at least around here. I don’t think I’ve ever seen them all across a roof like that.

That’s a bummer about the logs. Do you know if they’re going to put log veneers over the beams to retain the log home feel?

These roofs are designed to handle the snow load and they want to retain the snow on the roof to add to the neighborhood look during the winter season. There will usually be up to 3 feet on the roof for a few months.
Also, probably a given, they don’t want a huge sheet of snow falling from that height.

They will be capping the steel in wood but it won’t be logs this time so it will look closer to the neighboring houses.

Luckily we don’t deal with bugs like termites aside from the beetles in the forest sometimes. It’s just rot from 20 years of freeze / thaw cycles.
